I guess this is an indication of a problem in itself. I would have already tried to uninstall the driver package from the programs list if I could see anything there it could possibly be. Hi, thanks for the suggestion darkbreeze. I was already incredibly frustrated with windows 8, now I'd quite happily murder anyone involved in the development of it with my bare hands. Sorry for the very long post, really hope someone out there can help, have spent most of today trying to sort this.

I don't really know how to read all the info in the details tab but the capabilities property has a value of 00000000 which doesn't sound promising to me! I've also tried doing a system restore to before the update but this also failed with the message 'access denied'. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling many many times, including downloading the driver from the Lenovo website and using the driver from the D drive, always with the same error: There is an exclamation mark next to the device in device manager and an error code for the driver that states 'Reinstall the drivers for this device. Installed windows updates earlier today, including an optional one for the conexant audio device, and now there is no sound.
